Q: What is your background? Where are you from?
A: I am from the neighborhood Puerta de Tierra right next to Old San Juan and I have lived in Puerto Rico my whole life.
Q: What motivated or inspired you to be in conservation?
A: I love the history at San Juan National Historic Site. I wanted to gain the tools to continue to develop myself and help the conservation efforts.
Q: How did you find ACE? What is your role and did you grow into an assistant or crew leader position with ACE after your AmeriCorps term?
A: I was formerly a YCC member at San Juan National Historic Site and that’s how I learned about the opportunity with ACE. I was in YCC and I saw the ACE crew doing more intense projects during my summer experience as a high school senior. I started as a crew member with the Trails and Maintenance crew and then moved into the Masonry Apprentice Crew. (Ramon was recently promoted to Crew Leader as of September 20, 2021)
Q: What is your favorite aspect of being an ACE corpsmember?
A: I really enjoy working with my fellow crew members “compañeros” and learning new skills.
Q: What tasks did you train for and participate in while on projects? Which was your favorite and why?
A: I really enjoy landscaping, trimming grass, and making the mix (sand, limestone, crushed bricks, and water) for historic wall repair at Fortaleza San Cristobal and El Morro. Making the mix for wall repair is really interesting and also challenging to make sure it is done correctly.
Q: What has been one of the biggest challenges?
A: At first, one of the biggest challenges was learning how to use the mechanized equipment for landscaping.
Q: What are your future goals?
A: I want to be a professional in the field of conservation and help other people as they have helped me when I was new in the career.
Q: Do you think this position at ACE is helping prepare you for your future career?
A: Yes, a ton! It’s my first job. I started with ACE when I was 18 and I’m now 21. I have learned a little bit of everything and I feel prepared to apply for future jobs with ACE and with the National Park Service.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Goals in Conservation for the future?
A: Probably working with the National Park Service or another conservation job.
Q: How has ACE helped to shape who you are personally and professionally?
A: Personally, ACE has helped me discover things in me that I didn’t know I could do. Professionally, it’s helped me work in groups, and helped me work under pressure. It also helped me to know that I have the abilities to use skills that I had not used previously.
Q: What advice can you offer to future corps members who are looking to get into the conservation field?
A: Learn as much as possible so that you can execute the work as professionally as possible. Also, be the best “compañero” (coworker/ colleague) you can be!

P: ¿Cuál es tu experiencia? ¿De donde eres?
R: Soy del barrio Puerta de Tierra justo al lado del Viejo San Juan y he vivido en Puerto Rico toda mi vida.
P: ¿Qué te motivó o inspiró a estar en conservación?
R: Me encanta la historia del Sitio Histórico Nacional de San Juan. Quería obtener las herramientas para seguir desarrollándome y ayudar en los esfuerzos de conservación.
P: ¿Cómo encontraste ACE? ¿Cuál es su puesto de trabajo? ¿Se convirtió en asistente o líder de equipo en ACE después de su mandato en AmeriCorps?
R: Anteriormente fui miembro de YCC en el Sitio Histórico Nacional de San Juan y así fue como me enteré de la oportunidad con ACE. Estaba en YCC y vi al equipo de ACE haciendo proyectos más intensos durante mi experiencia de verano como estudiante de
último año de secundaria. Comencé como miembro del equipo con el equipo de Senderos y Mantenimiento y luego pasé al Equipo de Aprendiz de Albañilería. (Ramon fue ascendido recientemente a líder de equipo a partir del 20 de septiembre de 2021).
P: ¿Cuál es tu aspecto favorito de ser un corpsmember de ACE?
R: Disfruto mucho trabajar con mis compañeros de tripulación y aprender nuevas habilidades.
P: ¿En qué tareas entrenó y participó mientras estaba en proyectos? ¿Cuál fue tu favorito y por qué?
R: Disfruto mucho el paisajismo, podar el césped y hacer la mezcla (arena, piedra caliza, ladrillos triturados y agua) para la reparación de muros históricos en Fortaleza San Cristóbal y El Morro. Hacer la mezcla para la reparación de paredes es muy interesante y también un desafío para asegurarse de que se haga correctamente.
P: ¿Cuál ha sido uno de los mayores desafíos?
R: Al principio, uno de los mayores desafíos fue aprender a utilizar el equipo mecanizado para el paisajismo.
P: ¿Cuáles son sus metas para el futuro?
R: Quiero ser un profesional en el campo de la conservación y ayudar a otras personas como me han ayudado cuando era nuevo en la carrera.
P: ¿Crees que este puesto en ACE te está ayudando a prepararte para tu futura carrera?
R: ¡Sí, una tonelada! Es mi primer trabajo. Empecé con ACE cuando tenía 18 años y ahora tengo 21 años. He aprendido un poco de todo y me siento preparado para solicitar unos empleos futuros con ACE y con el Servicio de Parques Nacionales.
P: ¿Dónde te ves en 5 años? ¿Objetivos de conservación para el futuro?
R: Probablemente trabajando con el Servicio de Parques Nacionales u otro trabajo de conservación.
P: ¿Cómo ha ayudado ACE a moldear quién es usted personal y profesionalmente?
R: Personalmente, ACE me ha ayudado a descubrir cosas en mí que no sabía que podía hacer. Profesionalmente, me ha ayudado a trabajar en grupos y me ha ayudado a trabajar bajo presión. También me ayudó a saber que tengo las destrezas para usar habilidades que no había usado anteriormente.
P: ¿Qué consejo puede ofrecer a los futuros Corpsmembers que estén buscando ingresar al campo de la conservación?
R: Aprenda tanto como sea posible para que pueda ejecutar el trabajo de la manera más profesional posible. Además, ¡sé el mejor compañero que puedas ser!
